Freelance Photography Jobs Or the 9-5 Photography Jobs?

There’s a lot of competition for photography jobs. However, opportunities are not limited and employment in the field is increasing at an average rate of about 9 to 17 percent since 2004. And according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of them are self-employed.

Some high profile photographers make up to $100,000 / year. However, rough estimates indicate that the industry average for photographers is between $14,000 to $54,748 / year. Whether you decide to be self-employed freelance photographer or to work in a salaried photography job is completely up to you. It just depends on how much control you want to have in your work. Salaried photography jobs do not have much artistic control and you work according to the schedule given to you by your employer. However, unlike a self-employed photographer, overhead expenses and building a customer base are not your responsibility.

Most entry-level photography jobs don’t actually require a formal education. However, basic understanding of photographic technique is a must.

What Photography Jobs Are Available?

There are many different directions you could chose from. These jobs are divided into 3 sections: Fine art, commercial and retail.

Commercial photography covers areas such as modeling, fashion and lifestyle, product illustration, advertising, annual reports, and editorials.

Retail photography, on the other hand, includes areas such as wedding photography, portrait studios and most other events while fine art photography is usually limited to galleries and some museums with photographers usually employing an agent to sell their work for a commission.

How To Find Photography Jobs.

Before you start looking, you will need to create a resume and a portfolio. You could start your search by looking at freelance photography job boards or websites and message boards.

If you are a freelancer, you can start by doing small events such as birthday parties or entering in photography contests. Word of mouth is one of the most effective ways of getting more work for yourself.

You could also start out as an assistant to another photographer which will help you gain valuable experience. If you’re lucky to get your work published in a magazine in the early stages, it will look good on your resume and boost your portfolio.

And if you’re more interested in salaried jobs, you can try applying directly to companies that are looking for photographers or more conveniently through a recruitment agency.
